Selecting a theme
It is important to note that optimization modifies your online store’s assets. If something goes wrong, your store could stop functioning correctly. For this reason, using a live (published) theme is not recommended.
The recommended way is to duplicate your theme and optimize the duplicated theme’s assets. After you’ve previewed and validated that the store works and looks as it should, you can publish it with the applied changes.
Usage and managing assets
Before optimization, you can measure the effect it will have by pressing
Measure on the target asset card. Measurements are always made against the active asset and does not generate usage charges. Use this information to decide whether you want to optimize the asset or not.
Optimization is available after measuring. To optimize an asset, press
Optimize on the asset card. This action will first create a backup of the chosen asset and store it in your assets directory. The backup name is the same as the original name with a
minify-backup-- prefix. After successfully saving a backup, the asset is replaced with an optimized version.
Note that each optimization will create a usage charge if the monthly cap has not been reached.
The easiest way to disable optimizations is to press
Disable on the asset card. If the service is unreachable or that option is not available for some reason, you can navigate to your theme’s assets directory and replace the content of the asset file with the content of the backup file. e.g. replace the content of
myasset.js with the content of
Editing assets after optimization
To edit an optimized asset, you should first disable the optimization. Disabling optimization replaces the optimized asset with its backup. After editing the asset, you can re-optimize it by pressing
Note that usage charges apply to all optimizations, including re-optimizations.
